Future Entrepreneurs has already put extensive plans in place to prepare for the eventual rollout of the latest changes to the curriculum. The document available for download on this page contains a description of new products and revisions to our existing products, all aimed at helping teachers cope with the demands of the revised curriculum statement.
 
The following is a summary outlined in the Ministers report. 
 
Five year plan /Streamline and clarify policies
  • All present curriculum and assessment documents will be combined into a single set of documents entitled “Curriculum and Assessment Policy” (CAP)
  • CAP will be released in September 2010 for implementation in 2011.
  • Much attention will be given to methodologies
  • This report supports the DoBE (Department of Basic Education)’s move away from OBE
  • Foundations for Learning must be implemented in all schools in 2010
Clarify the role of subject advisors
  • Clarity is needed on the roles of subject advisors (end 2009)
  • Cluster meetings should happen only once a year (end 2009)
Teacher workload and Administrative burden
  • Changes in the three levels of planning and content of Teacher File (Jan 2010)
  • Circulars regarding changes in curriculum or assessment no later than September of each year (Sept 2009)
  • Changes in grading descriptors to ensure consistency from grades 4 to 12 (January 2010)
  • Regular, external and systemic assessment of Maths and Home Language in grades 3 and 6
  • CTAs to be replaced with annual national testing for all Grade 9 learners in Maths, Home Language and First Additional Language (English) (2011)
  • Promotion and progression requirements clarified and finalised (2011)
  • Number of projects reduced to one project per year per learning area (Jan 2010)
  • Learner portfolios discontinued (January 2010)
  • Balance between year and exam marks: 50/50 for Grades 4-9; 25/75 for Grades 10-12
Transition and overload in the Intermediate Phase
  • Number of learning areas reduced from 8 to 6; some repackaged and time allocations adjusted
  • English must be taught as a First Additional Language also in Grade 1 and 2 (January 2010)
LTSM
  • National LTSM catalogue for textbooks aligned with CAP
  • Mechanisms and guidelines need to be developed in managing textbook pricing
  • Teachers to be encouraged to use textbooks
  • Control of textbook acquisition and distribution for Section 20 and 21 schools to be allocated to provinces
  • Each learner in grade 4 to 12 must have own textbook; guidelines on textbook retrieval
Teachers and training
  • In-service teacher training targeted and subject-specific
  • Principals etc. need in-depth training on curriculum and assessment requirements
  • HEIs should align teacher training programmes to CAP
  • Training should not prevent teacher teaching minimum number of hours each day.
